vol.131:Autumn Arashiyama Tour

Arashiyama is very popular all seasons.
Though the autumn is crowded with many tourists, we’d like to recommend the typical spots to those who still want to enjoy them.
Here are some spots you should definitely visit if you want to take a walk in Arashiyama.

Arashiyama’s landmark Togetsukyo


Togetsukyo is named after the anecdote that “the moon seemed to cross the bridge.”
The design of Togetsukyo Bridge, which naturally blends in with the beautiful mountain scenery of Arashiyama, and many tourists take commemorative photos. Check out the Arashiyama Hanatouro, a light-up event that takes place after the fall foliage season.

World Heritage Tenryuji Temple


Tenryuji Temple is the only World Heritage Site in Arashiyama. Inside the temple, you can see the “Dragon of Anywhere Gaze”, where you can see the dragon from any angle. The garden is also beautiful, and it is designated as a national historic site and special place of scenic beauty because it is a borrowed landscape garden that incorporates Arashiyama across the Oigawa River and Kameyama located to the west of the garden.
It is a spot where you can enjoy the grace of Arashiyama.

・ From Kyoto Station, take city buses 11, 28, and 93 and get off at the “Arashiyama Tenryuji-mae” bus stop.
・ From Kyoto Station, take Kyoto Bus 61, 72, 83 and get off at “Keifuku Arashiyama Station” bus stop.
・ Immediately from Keifuku Electric Railroad “Arashiyama Station”
・ A 13-minute walk from “Saga-Arashiyama Station” on the JR Sagano Line
・ 15 minutes walk from Hankyu train “Arashiyama station”

Worship fee:

・ 500 yen per person (separate from the regular worship fee)

500 yen (high school students and above), 300 yen (elementary and junior high school students), free (elementary school students and below)

・ Additional 300 yen to the garden worship fee
・ 8:30 am-4: 45 pm [Reception closes 4:30 pm]

* There are days when worship at various temples is suspended due to events, etc.
Holidays for visiting various temples: September 14, 2020, October 29-30, etc.

Superb view! Sagano Torokko Train


The “Sagano Torokko Train” is a sightseeing train that runs about 7.3km along the Hozu River from Sagano to Tamba Kameoka in about 25 minutes. If you ride a retro-designed 5-car diesel locomotive, you can experience the nature of the four seasons from the train.
Same-day tickets are also sold at each Sagano Torokko train station, but it is especially popular in autumn, so it is recommended that you make a reservation in advance. Tickets and reserved seat tickets can be purchased at the “Midori no Madoguchi” at major stations in JR West and at major travel agencies nationwide.
