vol.149: Prefectural Botanical Garden for cherry blossom viewing

Kyoto is famous as a tourist city, but there are many hidden spots. It is recommended because there are not as many people as major spots and you can see it slowly and quietly. The prefectural botanical garden introduced here is also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot, so be sure to visit it for spring sightseeing.

The botanical garden is located in Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, slightly north of the city. There are Kamogawa River, Prefectural University, Kyoto Concert Hall, etc. in the vicinity, and it has a quiet and calm atmosphere. It is the first public botanical garden in Japan and has a very long history. It opened in the Taisho era.

In the prefectural botanical garden, about 70 species and 500 cherry trees are in full bloom in spring. The large park is a place of relaxation for the citizens and is also famous as a date spot. Illumination is held in early April, and beautiful cherry blossoms emerge in the dark night. In addition, you can enjoy a different taste from ordinary cherry blossoms such as old weeping cherry trees and Yoshino cherry trees in the flower iris garden on the east side of the park.

There are many varieties such as Yoshino cherry tree and weeping cherry tree, and the best time to see them is slightly different. The best time to see the cherry blossoms is about 3 weeks from March to April, and it has the characteristic of being enjoyable for a long time. Along the Kamo River that runs next to it, there is a “half-tree road” where weeping cherry blossoms are in bloom. It looks like a cherry blossom tunnel, so why not go sightseeing together?

There is a viewing greenhouse in the park, so you can see various plants regardless of the season, and there are areas with various characteristics such as lotus ponds and rose gardens. The site area is as large as about 24 hectares, so it is recommended that you take the time to visit.

There are about 12,000 kinds of plants and about 120,000 plants in the park. On the north side of the park, there is an ecological botanical garden that uses a natural forest called “Half Tree Forest”, and not only do you appreciate it, but you also participate in events such as botanical garden classes and observation sessions, and botanical gardening consultations. While learning about plants, you can interact with them.
