Vol.187:Daikakuji Temple

We can now feel the signs of autumn, and mornings and evenings are getting cooler.
The trees along the streets and the mountains are starting to change color little by little, and it will soon be time to enjoy the autumn leaves season.
This time, we will introduce the charm of Daikakuji Temple in Sagano, Kyoto.

Daikakuji Temple

Daikakuji Temple was built as a villa for Emperor Saga. It is a very historical temple.
Osawa Pond, Japan’s oldest artificial pond built during the Heian period, is especially famous. It is also known as one of Japan’s three major moon viewing ponds.
The beautiful reflection of the moon on the pond and the scenery of the trees surrounding the pond turning red are spectacular views that you must see at least once.

The best time to see autumn leaves is usually from mid-November to early December, when the trees surrounding Osawa Pond are covered in bright autumn leaves.
The view from Godaido is especially spectacular, and you can enjoy the reflection of the autumn leaves in the pond and the beautiful scenery of Sagano.
Daikakuji Temple is a little less convenient to access than other famous temples in Sagano. Therefore, there are fewer people and you can enjoy the autumn leaves in a quiet atmosphere.

Daikakuji Temple is also famous as the birthplace of ikebana, and is often used as a filming location for period dramas and dramas.

On autumn nights, Osawa Pond is lit up in a magical light. You can enjoy a different atmosphere compared to visiting during the day.
The autumn leaves illuminated by the moonlight and lights are reflected in the pond, giving you a fantastic view.

Be sure to visit Daikakuji Temple for its autumn leaves and illuminations, where you can fully enjoy Kyoto in autumn!
