vol.40:What’s on this month in Kyoto?

In February, there are many events to go see. Don’t miss these special ones.
This time, we’d like to tell you about some events in Kyoto in February.

1. Geiko Performance

A geiko is a woman who keeps the traditional culture of Kyoto alive in our modern life.
Trained for many years in traditional Japanese arts, geiko is said to be a symbol of Kyoto culture.
It’s a quite rare opportunity to see geiko closely, even Kyoto residents find it’s difficult.
In this event, geiko will tell you a few anecdotes about her garments (kimono, obi sash, tabi socks, etc.) after playing shamisen (traditional musical instrument). All items of geiko’s clothing are gems of Kyoto traditional crafts.

2.Winter Travels in Kyoto Promotion Special Opening at Chishaku-in

At Chishaku-in Temple; the headquarters for the Shingon Sect’s Chisan School of Buddhism.
This time, the temple open to show their National Treasures which are created by HASEGAWA Tohaku and his son HASEGAWA Kyuzo.
The National Treasure designated wall paintings created by them and owned by Chishaku-in Temple once adorned the walls of Shoun-ji Temple’s Kyaku-den (guest hall).
Of the images of ‘cherry blossoms and maple trees,’ ‘the cherry blossom paintings’ are the work of Tohaku’s son, Kyuzo, who died aged 26. The other one, “maple trees” is the work of Tohaku to mourn for his son’s death.
It is said that these are masterpieces in their life.

3. Godai Rikison Ninno-e

Godai Rikison Ninno-e, as known as “Godairiki-san” and the largest event in Daigo-ji Temple, is held on February 23rd every year.
It is held to pray for the immediate elimination of misfortunes and immediate creation of good fortune.
In recent years, “Mochi age riki hono” (dedication of power by lifting a rice cake) has been famous.
In this event, male participants try to lift a 150 kg piece of rice cake and female visitors try 90 kg to dedicate power and pray for their health and happiness. It starts around noon.
