vol.63:The Picturesque Garden Murin-an

Murin-an is a garden that is designated as a national place of scenic beauty in 1951.
The garden is located in Higashiyama area, near the Nanzen-ji Temple.
This elegant villa was the home of prominent statesman Yamagata Aritomo (1838-1922) and site of a pivotal 1903 political conference as Japan was heading into the Russo- Japanese War.

The grounds contain well-preserved wooden buildings, including a fine Japanese tea room.
The scenic garden features small stream that draw water from the Biwa -ko Sosui canal.

There is a bright lawn space in Murin-an, which was unusual thing when the garden was built.
Mr. Yamagata, the owner of the garden, preferred grass nor moss, it has long been said that one of the finest charms of Kyoto’s gardens is the beauty of their moss, though.
Due to the high-humidity environment, however, the moss soon won out after the garden was completed.
Mr. Yamagata finally came to accept the moss.

The garden is held an event in the early morning for a limited time.
They offer a cup of green tea and Japanese sweets.
You enjoy seeing the garden with them in early morning.
It would be a great memory of your Kyoto trip.
The event is held from July 12th to 26th.
