Kyoto has some flea markets held every month, one is the Toji flea market held on the 21st of each month at Toji Temple and the other is the Kitano Tenmangu flea market held on the 25th of each month. (vol.85:Shimai Kōbō And Shimai Tenjin 2019)
This time, we’d like to tell you about one more popular flea market in Kyoto.
Chion-Ji Handicraft Market is held once every month on the 15th at the Hyakumanben Chionji Temple in Northern Kyoto.
The fabulous handicraft market is a great place to pick up unique souvenirs during your travels.
Access
The venue (Chion-Ji Temple) can be reached by bus or a short walk from Demachiyanagi Station.
There is bike parking at the main entrance on Imadegawa Street or just inside the side entrance on Hidgashioji Street.
Chion-Ji Handicraft Market
Chion-Ji is host to hundreds of artists, artisans, and food stands once a month.
The selection varies every month—stalls get in through a lottery system—but there are usually at least a handful of regulars there.
You’ll find stalls selling all manner of handmade arts, crafts, and food, including ceramics, jewelry, backpacks, tote bags, linocut postcards, organic soap, honey, skirts, and homemade bread.
Crowds & Weather
The best time to visit is in the morning.
By mid-afternoon after the lunch rush, food items like bread and pastries have usually sold out of many items.
If it rains on the event day, the event is open but some stalls close earlier than usual.
