Vol.190:The plum blossom festival at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine

The plum blossom festival at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is an early spring festival that represents Kyoto.
It is held on February 25th every year to celebrate the death anniversary of Michizane Sugawara, the famous god of learning.
Within the shrine grounds, about 1,500 plum trees bloom with red and white flowers, creating a beautiful scene.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is a shrine built during the Heian period, and is the center of Tenmangu shrines nationwide.
The shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, who is especially venerated as the God of Learning.
Many students preparing for exams and people studying hard visit the shrine to pray for success.
Michizane was also known for his deep love of plum blossoms.
One of his famous poems reads:
“When the east wind blows, let it send your fragrance, oh plum blossoms. Forget not spring, even though your master is gone.”
This poem inspired the well-known Flying Plum Tree Legend, which tells how a plum tree flew to accompany Michizane when he was exiled to Dazaifu.
