In August, Kyoto is in the middle of a hot summer season where you can hear the cries of cicadas everywhere.
In the evening, a cool breeze begins to blow, giving everyone a little rest.
On summer nights in Kyoto, you can enjoy special events at Kodaiji Temple.

Kodaiji Temple

Kodaiji Temple is a temple of the Kenninji sect of the Rinzai sect located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City.
Kodaiji Temple was built in 1606 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s wife Nene for her husband Hideyoshi.
The name of Kodaiji comes from Hideyoshi’s Buddhist name, Kodai-in.

Kodaiji Temple has beautiful gardens.
Many tourists visit here to enjoy cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn leaves in the fall.
Until August 18th, the anniversary of Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s death, Kodai-ji Temple will hold a special summer night visit.
During this period, the temple and gardens are illuminated, and about 900 lanterns are lit along the approach.
You can enjoy a fantastic atmosphere in the deep greenery.

When you visit Kodaiji Temple at night, you can also see a special exhibit called the “Hyakki Yagyo Exhibition”.
During Kodaiji’s special summer night visit, you can also see a special exhibit called the “Hyakki Yagyo Exhibition.”
In this exhibition, you can see the old and new Hyakki Yagyō Emaki in the temple.
Furthermore, an event called “Tomoshibi” is held at Ungoan.
Here, you can write a message to your ancestors and loved ones on the goma tree and light a candle to dedicate it to them.
