vol.14:The Daimonji Festival on August 16th

The “Gozan Okuribi” – known as the Daimonji Festival – occurs annually on August 16th beginning at 8 p.m.
You can see all five fires on the five mountains of Kyoto.

During the Obon holiday, it’s believed that deceased ancestors return from the afterlife to visit the living.
The Daimonji festival marks the end of their stay and guides the dead back to heaven with its burning fires.

It is different from the gorgeous festival like the Gion festival, we keep quietly watching while the fire gains momentum, weakens and disappears.

The time with fire is very short, about 30 minutes. We recommend that you arrive at a places of observation before 8 o’clock.
