It’s been cooler since the end of September, though it sometimes gets hot day.
Kyoto has many events every day especially in October so you may wonder where to go.
This time, we’d introduce two fall festival.
Zuiki Festival @Kitano Tenmangu Shrine
The Zuiki Matsuri Festival is a fall festival held at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine to express gratitude for bountiful harvests of that year.
This festival has been loved by the local residents for many years, and the most eye-catching aspect of this festival is Zuiki Mikoshi decorated with zuiki and vegetables.
Zuiki is a taro stems and the roofs of portable shrine are all made with taro potato stalks called zuiki.
Zuiki Festival is held yearly for five consecutive days from October 1st to 5th.
On October 4th and 5th, the procession is held and the portable shrine departs from Otabisho (temporary shrine).
In the parade, people dressed in Heian-style costumes, Shihimai lion and the dazzling box can be seen.
Some maiko get in the line to be bitten by shishimai so it’s good chance to see them.

15:30/Goensai Festival Young girls performed a traditional offering called the Yaotome Dance.

Fushimi Festival @Gokonomiya Shrine
Gokonomoiya Shrine is the center place to pray for local gods in Fushimi area.
The nine day Fushimi Festival is also called Hanagasa Festival (Flower Umbrella) and the biggest festival around this area.
About 1,000 locals take part in the procession and hold the big hanagasa and shake it.
The tradition of this hanagasa parade has about 600 year history.
There are some vendors in the site so you can enjoy festival food in Japan.
