Seiryu-e at Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Seiryu-e is held on March 15th, April 3rd, and September 15th every year.
This year, 2024, is the year of the Dragon, so we think it has a special meaning.

At first, the event begins with a ceremony called the “Hakko Tokusui no Gi” at the inner temple of Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
This ritual uses special water that is said to be found in the ponds of the Pure Land.
Afterwards, the procession travels with Seiryu to Jishu Shrine and Otowa Falls.
Otowa Falls is a symbolic location of Kiyomizu-dera Temple, as there is a legend that a dragon will fly down to drink at night.

The sight of the 18-meter-long Seiryu descending the stone steps of Kiyomizu-dera Temple is very impressive and is a big attraction for local people and tourists.
This event, which is attended by about 50 participants wearing solemn costumes, gives a sense of Kiyomizu-dera’s history and the depth of its faith.

Seiryu-e is also believed to not only prays for the protection of the region and the peace, but also sever bad relationships and forge good ones.
Why not experience the special Seiryu-e held in the Year of the Dragon in 2024?
