Kyoto has the big two flea market, Shimai K\u014db\u014d and Shimai Tenjin.
\nK\u014db\u014d market is held every 21st of the month at Toji temple enshrines Kukai.
\nThe other is Tenjin market held every 25th of the month at Kitano Tenmang\u016b shrine.<\/p>\n
Though these flea market is very popular event every month, the last one of the year is exceptional.<\/p>\n

\nThe reason why the flea market is held every same date is the anniversary of one\u2019s death.
\nKukai passed away on March 21st in 835 and Sugawara no Michizane passed away on February 25th in 903. Sugawara no Michizane was also born on 25th so the meaning of the date might be more important.
\nThey were loved by many people at that time, so they visit and pray for them at Toji and Kitano Tenmang\u016b shrine.
\nThen some vendors were lined up there and got popular.<\/p>\n
Although both K\u014db\u014d market and Tenjin market are held every month, the last one of the year is more popular and famous.
\nPeople visit and pray to express the gratitude for living in peace.<\/p>\n
More than 100,000 people come and more than 1,000 vendors are lined up at both market.
\nYou\u2019ll find various things like antiques, kimono, potteries, local foods.
\nOnly in December, Japanese new year\u2019s ornaments are sold at the market.
