{"id":2519,"date":"2019-07-04T16:02:37","date_gmt":"2019-07-04T07:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kyonaka-gozan.kyoto\/koi\/?p=2519"},"modified":"2019-07-04T16:25:57","modified_gmt":"2019-07-04T07:25:57","slug":"vol61","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kyonaka-gozan.kyoto\/koi\/en\/event\/vol61\/","title":{"rendered":"vol61.The history and origin of Gion Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kyoto in July is completely dominated by the Gion Festival, one of the most famous festivals in all of Japan.<br \/>\nAbout 180,000 people visit this annual events though, not everyone knows its history.<br \/>\nThis time, we\u2019d like to explain some histories of Gion Festival to enjoy it more.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5b\">The History of Gion Festival<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/kyonaka-gozan.kyoto\/media\/koi\/sites\/10\/20190704_1-300x196.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"196\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2515\" \/><br \/>\nWhen Kyoto was the capital of Japan, during Heian Period (794), the people were suffered from a sequence of catastrophic including earthquake, tsunami, plague and epidemics.<br \/>\nAs Kyoto people were devoted Shinto believers, under the fear, they organized parades, carrying portable statuaries (mioshi), and would decorate 66 halberds representing 66 old provinces.<br \/>\nAt that time, it was believed that Aramitama (fierce divine spirit) or evil spirits would occur the catastrophes.<br \/>\nTherefore, people dedicated the rituals or pray to appease their spirits.<br \/>\nBy medieval times, the Faith spread nationwide, Gion-sha Shrines or Gozu Ten\u2019n\u014d Shrines enshrining Gozu Tenno were built, and Goryo-e were held as celebrations.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5b\">Why is the festival held at Yasaka jinja Shrine?<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/kyonaka-gozan.kyoto\/media\/koi\/sites\/10\/20190704_2-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2516\" \/><br \/>\nYasaka jinja Shrine is an important site for Gion Festival because it worships Gozu Ten\u2019n\u014d.<br \/>\nGozu-Ten\u2019n\u014d is a guardian deity of Buddhism and is considered to be the same god as Susano\u2019o-no-mikoto in Japan.<br \/>\nGozu Tenno, which had been believed to bring diseases and misfortunes to people, was enshrined in Yasaka-jinja Shrine in Kyoto, giving birth to gion shinko.<br \/>\nThe order for the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism in Meiji prohibited Buddhist rituals at shrines, as well as the use of Buddhist terms such as Gozu Ten\u2019n\u014d  and Gion in names of enshrined deities and shrines, and thus, Gion jinja Shrine and Gozu- Ten\u2019n\u014d -sha Shrine became shrines enshrining Susanoo and changed their shrine\u2019s name.<\/p>\n<h5 class=\"style5b\">The Hardship of Gion Festival<\/h5>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/kyonaka-gozan.kyoto\/media\/koi\/sites\/10\/20190704_3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2517\" \/><br \/>\nGion Festival has faced the crisis of continuance several time in its history.<br \/>\nThe biggest crisis was the outbreak of Onin War in 1467 whish has been lasting for 11 years at the center of Kyoto.<br \/>\nIt took thirty-three years to restart the Gion Festival after the War.<br \/>\nThe festival was prohibited soon again by Enryakuji Temple because the religious struggle between Tendai sect and Jodoshinshu sect got fierce in 1533.<br \/>\nOf course, citizens protested this order and requested.<br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019d like to hold the Gion Festival even without prayer.\u201d<br \/>\nThis was the beginning of the Gion Festival led by Kyoto people.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Gion Festival is listed on UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. And it can be appreciated by everyone for free. Just get yourself a nice spot and do not forget your camera and some water.
